Community Connections: Independent Living Skills

In January, the Independent Living Skills Class at RiseUp Red Wing participated in mock interviews with Workforce Development, Inc. These mock interviews gave students an opportunity to practice critical interviewing skills with working adults in a safe, supportive environment, and offered them a glimpse into the process of finding a job and starting their careers.

David LeGarde, a Career Planner at Workforce, reflected on this experience:

“One of the most fulfilling parts of my job as a Career Planner is assisting youth and young adults with Independent Living Skills. As someone who struggled with many of these skills after graduating high school, I am well aware of how important they are for those at the beginning of their path.”

“In my experience, I have found young people to be very open about learning things that can be overlooked such as budgeting money, understanding finances, laundry, food preparation, housing, and physical and mental health. As someone with a passion for helping others, I get a great deal of satisfaction in providing this knowledge.”
